The Rays took care of their void behind the plate with the signing of Wilson Ramos on Tuesday. Ramos is coming off his finest season in the pros as he hit .307 with 22 home runs and 80 RBI for the Nationals in 2016. The Rays were in desperate need of some catching help as they were relying upon Luke Maile and Curt Casali to platoon last season.
The addition of Ramos to this Rays team shows they still have some confidence they could contend for a Wild Card spot as they liking are opting to stick with guys like Evan Longoria and Chris Archer moving forward.
As far as Ramos’ old team, the Nationals, they made a move to acquire Derek Norris from the Padres. Despite Norris being a step down from Ramos, they felt the money he was demanding was just too much and the catcher spot was not one of their immediate needs.
