The Giants have taken a huge step in the right direction as they have inked Mark Melancon to a three-year deal that will help shore up the bullpen. The bullpen was a huge source of trouble for the Giants in 2016 as they did not really have a clear cut closer, which would come to haunt them during the home stretch of the year. In Melancon they have found one of the better closers over the past several seasons as he had 130 saves over his four seasons with Pittsburgh and another 17 as a member of the Nationals.
With Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen likely demanding more than the Giants were willing to shell out, Melancon will be quite the consolation prize for them. Melancon is a strikeout pitcher with his 8.2 K/9 and does not walk many batters. His high energy approach will likely fit right in on this Giants team with the likes of Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner and Hunter Pence.
Alongside Mark Melancon in the bullpen, the Giants will have Hunter Strickland, Will Smith and George Kontos likely being the main three guys to bridge the gap from starter to Melancon. This is likely not the last move the Giants will make to their bullpen as they are definitely looking for some more pieces as they feel they have a pretty solid team around them.
